I fell in love with the original QUAD the ESL(57) in 1981. I've been smitten ever since. I will always own a pair they are quite special. That is what I am listening to at the moment.
When the ESL-63 was introduced in 1981 we called it the 'new' QUAD and referred to the original as the 'old' QUAD. Which QUAD is best? That has been debated endlessly since 1981 there are strong proponents, and detractors, for both designs.
It largely comes down to personal preferences what kind of music do you like, listening habits, room, etc. Every time I listen to the original I think yep this is certainly the best QUAD. Then I listen to the 63 and think nope this is the best QUAD. I think everyone should own both!
Which is the best is which ever one is in the listening room. If I had to choose one the scale tips in favor of the 63 design I just find it a more complete speaker. OTOH when I listen to the original I think sure they are limited but who cares they are so musically engaging.
The latest version of the 63 design, the 2812X and 2912X, are very special by far the best version of the 63 design to date.
