Here in South Florida there are years when the November-March seasonal average temperatures drop quite "low" (like...60s)...low enough for the natives to grab for their coats! When most local folks are COMPLAINING about temps in the 60s, I am loving it and wishing for the ocassional drop to the 40s (and our seasonal Canadian crowd laugh at the consternation this causes among locals). The reason is not just that I like the chill. Importantly, A/Cs are turned off & electrical noise also drops. It is MY FAVORITE time of the year because music sounds even better (or uglier if something is out of whack).
During this season, there were no forums for me...of any kind. Busy with unexpected extra work and with a surge in stay-in guests, I left every single available free moment for the music (70%) and a little re-testing of things tried earlier. Aside from the "TV test", no new tweaks, as such.
So, I did reserve time for "tweak verification runs". This time, I took advantage of my visitors to get some impressions along the way. I'll elaborate later if someone wants details on some of the following.
1. For the first time ever, I removed the plasma TV from the middle. Yet, the TV is now back in the middle where it was before...and I have no regrets. To explain it, I'll have to scan some hand drawings (or re-make them digitally, the scanner is broken).
2. My MMGs + Full-Razoring + Stixbees (mere oak 1x2x42" sticks reinforcing the sides) are FINAL. This combo is a winner.
3. Bi-amping (with, AT THE VERY LEAST, the tweeter at line level) is a substantial reason for my MMGs to be sounding so good to me over the past 2 years.
4. BTW, Magnepan is not wrong with the current slopes in their MMG xovers.
5. Al's chokes (one for the tweeter, another for the lows) are still a blessing, at least where I live.
6. On POWER AMP needs, after a parade of owned and borrowed equipment: MMGs sound great with good low power amps (80-100w) if allowed to image well. They also sound great with high power amps if allowed to image well.. Sure, high power is a greater "great", but not necessarily a "needed great". (There are other qualitative considerations, of course. For now, power supply quality is key to sustain imaging and bass...not that I am breaking any news to many here.)
Anyway, I've got to start reading the older posts now, I am quite behind. I even resisted the temptation to drop in when the 3.7s were announced (well, we figured they were coming, months ago). It also looks like we have some new "faces", great!
