RE: Josh - similar misdiagnosis here

I remember reading a post years ago by Charles Hansen of Ayre Acoustics fame, that if one can not afford a really good active preamp, the next best thing is a passive.

I been using a first gen Channel Island VPC-1 for a while now, that I bought used off the 'gon for around a hundred clams.

Matched it up with a brand new CI VDA2/VAC1 DAC. Use as short as possible diy interconnect cables. Very nice cheapo system, but I can imagine it could easily be surpassed at the extremes, by a good active preamp, especially in low playback levels.

I would definably recommend a passive pre and used SS amp setup to run Maggies, as opposed to a new inexpensive HT receiver.
