I like the color choice and I bet they help with the sound.

Agree with rick that there might be some out of phase connection issues that would account for the lost bass.

Put some damping strips on those pole pieces!!!

On the metal pieces you used to attach things did you have to bend them or did you find them that way??

Also dont let jben know about your results. he says that the highs increase with the pole pieces forward.

And what is that board on the last pict? Does it help hold the speakers up??
