I don't see why you couldn't dampen the backwave. You will lose output and have to turn it up even higher for a given loudness.....but in principle, it should work.
You can Diffuse:: Many diffusor choices including 'the random bookshelf' method
You can Absorb:: stuff like OC703 panels. Some people like them between the speakers, wall mounted
You can Reflect:: This'll lead to image / phase problems, I think.
You've got some experiments to try. Give each major change at least a day of listening to shake out. As you get closer to 'perfection', leave the setup longer. Don't make snap decisions unless it it really awful.
The near side of my panels is about 31" from the wall and the furthest about 34", so I don't have lots of toe, considering my 11' listening distance. This is about 10degrees. My panels are turned with the mylar towards the listener and the tweeters to the inside of the array. Nice.
Personally, I'd avoid the 'speaker mod' school until you settle out the bigger issues of placement and sound.....
