I could not let this thread slip by me without putting my 2 cents worth in if you don't mind. I discovered two male singers who blow me away but the quality of the recording is suspect at best. The first singer extradinair is Andy Bey. I have several recordings but find I listen a lot to his "Shades Of Bey" recording. This man has a voice like fine wine and travels at least 4 octaves. He has been singing a long time and is a "singers singer". This other very gifted singer who is rather new on the jazz circuit is Mr. Kurt Elling. I have his "Man In The Air" recording and it's a mind bender.
One of my other favorite singers is Mr. Al Jarreau. What can I say about this man that has not been said before and he can sing too! Not specifically jazz but a fine singer none the less, there is "Sting". I heard him on a jazz recording but cannot recall the recording. I thought then, "this man can sing". Years ago when I was selling audio components I use to play "Blood Sweat & Tears" recording as a demo. This is when I fell in love with David-Dlayton-Thomas. At that time I mostly used classical music to demo a system. After hearing BS&T that was it. I almost could not get enough of hearing this group. As a matter of fact, BS&T was how I was introduced to one of the greatest groups I have ever heard. That group was "Earth Wind & Fire.
Of course there are other very fine male singers and I've missed many, but the one's I've named here are wonderful to listen to. Finally, someone here thought it a great idea that we list great recordings that play well on Maggies. That would be a wonderful listing. Just to know what outstanding recordings others have purchased would be great. If that thread ever shows up I will certainly post regarding a few recordings I have that might fit the catagory. Thanks much all for being so wonderful.
