I'm not sure it makes a difference. I did a lot of temperature test in the box with a digital thermometer before decided on the aquarium gravel and the temps never got above room ambient. I'm sure clean sand would work at well as the gravel, but the coated gravel is so clean and can removed so much more easily. No dust issues once rinsed from the bag.
