RE: Maggie 3.6R vs 20.1

You will find the bass missing from both the Maggies 3.x series, and the big Quad.

The options are

Magnepan MG20 or MG20.1
Magnepan used recently refurbished Tympani IV or IVA = very easy to modify. When you brace the bass panels with solid legs, you get more bass output than you can get from an MG20.x.

I took a Tympani IV and replaced its midrange with a line array of Neo 8 drivers (very easy to do and can be put in with the existing stock crossover, or multiamping) these drivers integrate better with the ribbon tweeter than the original does since they have a lighter and stronger diaphragm and lighter foil instead of wires.
If you like to experiment, buy a pair of Neo 8 drivers from parts express, hook them up to your amp and set them on the floor slightly diagonal - leaning against your rack or speakers, or whatever, and listen to them with a good stereo recording of a midrange instrument (violin- flute) or female voice. They will give you detail you never heard before. They are also just raw drivers without crossover, structure, or eq, so don't expect them to sound anything like flat FR.

Other options
Used Apogee
Full Range (old model should only be bought refurbished)
Diva
Scitilla
These will set you back $4000-$10000 depending on condition and availability of the associated electronic crossover.

New alternatives that are rather costly

Analysis Audio (Greece) Amphitryon ($25K?) or Orion, The Omega ($15K) may not have sufficiently robust bass. I think they have an LA based dealer.

Apogee Acoustics, Australia - Synergy (?) model is similar to Scintilla about $30K
