There seems to be some misunderstanding. The Tympani 1-D mid-woofer is only used between 100-200 Hz. 200-4500 Hz is handled by the Carver driver. The EMIT takes care of frequencies over 4500 Hz. The EMITs are not mounted back-to-back. He used just the front halfs of them, which are open. The rear halfs are closed. He could just as well have cut holes in the rear halfs.
