Hi all:

I have a Denon DRA-700 that won't hold radio stations in memory any longer unless it's been on for a long time and gets turned on again shortly. After a few hours of being off, the radio resets to its default frequency. Clearly the internal battery needs changing.

Over on another forum people suggested it was a Sanyo capacitor style battery. However, I can't find one (and I can't locate a service manual). What I DID find is a button-style battery soldered onto the board. Its only marking is the number #32".

Would this be the equivalent of a CR2032 rechargeable button battery, and is this what I'm looking for? Or is the Sanyo capacitor battery hidden somewhere? (I haven't had the courage to start disassembling circuit boards yet)

Hide full thread outline!

I fixed a similar problem in one of my father's receivers a few years back - it was the Capacitor style - can't remember the details - and the form factor no longer was made by the time of the replacement!

My money is on the CR2032 - but check the physical dimensions

Great, thanks. Do you by chance know f that would be a rechargeable or non-rechargeable battery?

The circuit is addressing the charge/recharge
Most probably-

There were some clever solutions in the last century...-

Thanks again. I'm sorry, I'm just learning to try to repair things like this. So, by "the circuit is addressing the charge/recharge", you mean it's probably a conventional (as opposed to rechargeable) battery?

All batteries can be recharged-
And a receiver has enough voltage options to run a trickle-
You may not find a 'rechargeable CR2032'...-.

I would be surprised if that's actually a battery. Units I'm familiar with use a "super capacitor" for memory voltage. Google this and you'll see various styles.

Can you post a photo showing the physical location of this part?

That does look like a CR2032 battery. Does it have any number to figure out what it is?

In any case, soldering could be difficult. To stick to metal, you likely will need to use jewlery silver solder paste and a torch.

Hi Rod:

In the first picture, you can just see that the number 32 is printed on the underside of the battery in black ink. That's what amde me think it might be a CR2032

Are you sure this is a DRA-700. One of the photos you posted includes a small inline IC labeled IC505. However, the DRA-700 manual that I located online shows IC505 to be a three-terminal device attached to a heatsink. The manual is for the Europe and U.K. models, but I wouldn't have though there would be so much difference. What is the complete model number on the rear ID plate on yours?

That's interesting. The manual I found is for the DRA-700AE, DRA-700AEDAB and DRA-500AE. I spent over an hour searching the schematics and parts lists for a supercap, a battery, or anything similar. Nothing. After you posted those photos, I looked again and did some keyword searching. Some of the parts that are clearly labeled in your photos don't even exist. I also found an inside view of a DRA-700 like yours online. The image isn't sufficient resolution to zoom in too much, but I can tell the board is the same as yours, and I can kinda make out the battery near the edge of the PCB. The Main PWB in the manual I found is very different, so I guess the Europe version is a different animal, and the entire effort was just a waste of time. I'd like to tell you how to handle the battery issue, but I guess it's not possible without the right manual. Personally, if it was mine, I'd be willing to spend $20 or $25 on a manual, just to be sure I installed the correct one. Maybe something to consider. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I replaced a button battery on one of my receivers (Kyocera I think) with a button battery holder which eliminated the soldering problem and also allows for easy future replacement. I'm pretty sure it was for a 2032. I think I got it at Mouser or Digikey. Good luck.

Hey, no problem and I really appreciate you looking. It's confusing - I went through the same process trying to find a service manual for free online. Denon re-used the model number around 2012, adding an AE at the end, for an A/V receiver, which is what pops up on most web searches.

The DRA-700 I have is not very well documented online as far as I can tell. What's even more confusing, apparently the DRA-600 from the same series as mine does use a capacitor-style battery. As does the DRA-750, the next incarnation of the model I have. So, apparently the button cell was a one-off for this particular receiver. I've ordered a button cell battery holder that I'll solder in place here, so replacing the battery won't be such a hassle in the future.

Funny, I did that last year for my lawn sprinkler system. The battery cell was soldered to the board, and the manufacturer wouldn't even answer my emails. I robbed a holder from an old PC motherboard and fixed it right up. Happy listening!
