Marantz Tuner Model Inquiry

 I like to have vintage high quality components. I have long admired those beautiful old Marantz tuners with horizontal, heavy, flywheel tuning knobs, meters or scopes to rate signal quality and so on.
I write to ask those who really know these components, to suggest specific models of that type.

Recommendations? Features? Still reliable?

 The 10-B is legendary, and for good reason. Bring very deep pockets to keep it in top form.

The McIntosh MR-71 with Richard Modaferri's mods has been called, by the always humble Modaferri, as the "10-B killer." It is, almost. The RF section isn't quite as good, but it's no slouch, either. Its audio section, like that of the 10-B, is breathtaking.

The other Marantz tuners are all good, if not nearly up to the sound quality of these two. Meters and 'scopes are nice, but your ears are better than any instruments for tuning in a station.

 I would echo Bill's comments-
If you want the best- the 10B is what you want-
there are only a couple of tuners that compete w/ the 10B-
McIntosh MR-71
H.H. Scot 4130

Some would include the McIntosh MR-74, and a few others- but ...

If you really want the Superscope Marantz look, try the model 20 - but find a good tech to make sure it is aligned - I have no heard it - but from your OP, it is the Look you are after...

 I'm curious if your meaning of 'horizontal, heavy flywheel tuning knobs' has been understood correctly.

To me, the 10B set a standard for what a tuner should look like, and is iconic in appearance and many other ways. Prices are out of sight, though, and they are complex and prone to optocoupler failures.

I though by 'horizontal, heavy flywheel tuning knobs,' you meant the models where one adjusts a flywheel knob from side to side, as opposed to rotating it on a horizontal axis. If that is the case, the series of 20, 20B, 120, 120B, and 150 might be for you (these have scopes). Though not as highly regarded or prized as the 10B, some are good performers, particularly when updated and modified.

 I have a 125 tuner which is the 150 without the scope. Yes, they are big.
If you need a smaller format, look into the 112, or some others below that.
