This really hit hard. Wrote one of the first profiles on Russell right after he'd joined Harry Connick Jr.'s orchestra in 1990 and begun his meteoric rise to jazz stardom (collaborations with Diana Krall, Ron Carter, Sonny Rollins, on and on would follow). Actually just saw him live last November. My only regret at the time was not attending the other 3 shows he did the same weekend. 60 years young, too damn soon. Bless you and your music.

He was a good one, gone way way too soon.

The way he constructs a solo, as here on Bacharach's "I Say A Little Prayer For You", is pure bliss. Live in concert, the originality and profusion of ideas would trip off his fingertips like nectar on the ears. Sobbing like an old fool as I listen to this artistry.

Russell toured the Far East last year in a trio with Ron Carter, who's still going strong at 87. Why the good have to die so young I'll never know.

Damn, I was so looking forward to hearing him with Carter and Vega in DC next weekend.

RIP

Photog watermark at bottom right. Yes, an exquisite shot of 2 legends.

Ron Carter's and Donald Vega's tribute to their departed colleague to close out the DC Jazzfest moved me to tear. Their encore: There Will Never Be Another You. An empty stool stage left for Mr. Malone. RIP

What a beautiful gesture to a brother musician.
