Dissatisfied with Tony Bennett, even with Bill Evans, I gave some other vocalists a whirl in But Beautiful. Like Days of Wine and Roses it's a lovely lyric when sung with sensitivity and not just tossed off, as is the case with some singers. So I liked Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday - they had true feeling.

And then I came across Shirley Horn, who sings it very, very slowly. And it turns out to be......well, beautiful.

i was on my way to work at about 6:30AM in the dark and on comes these noodlings from Mile Davis and I was elated thinking it was a new Miles album but NO, the sultry emoting of Shirley with the title word that begins that song on the album of the same name. i was HOOKED and was buying all that she was releasing at the time, as they came out.

then I started on her older releases and they are also wonderful but that song really got my attention and her albums of that era are her best IMHO.

now start listening to Abbey Lincoln at roughly the same period and you'll be off on another adventure.
...regards...tr

Huge fan. She's one of my favorites! Thanks for reminding us of her.

I only have this CD, but it's a keeper. Great late night jazz with feeling. nt, posted on August 19, 2024 at 17:50:07

Of course! DC's own. If she would have been willing to leave DC for NYC, she would have been more recognized as the great she was, both piano and voice.

Ciao,

This is one of my favorite tracks. I've only listened to a few albums, but her style draws me in.

Wasn't she pretty much only DC?

Died way too young.

Can't answer your question, but Eva is my favorite female singer. Her, posted on August 25, 2024 at 10:16:54

voice could fill a room, and she had the emotion too. What a tragic loss.
