The KAB strobe disk displays 33, 45, 70, 72, etc up to 90.
When the suplied strobe light shines on the spinning disk the speed shows up as if it's standing still when the speed is correct. And, if the 'table is a bit off the number drifts left or right.
In this way a rock solid "33" is a locked 33 1/3 RPM.
one alternative uses any neon light with any strobe markings available . Some test records have such marks on the label, and I have even come across some regular recordings that also have strobe marks on the label. the frequency of the AC line causes the optical effect.
I guess most today just use a phone app. the mechanics of that motion sensor are very interesting.
It really is 33 1/3rd rpm.
From your initial comment, I thought I must've had the wrong idea all these years!
