I started streaming with Spotify and was very surprised at the sound quality...But the gap from digital to vinyl has disappeared. Streaming is very impressive.
Note that Spotify has the worst quality of the streaming services with its lossy compression format. Far better exists with many other choices. I use Qobuz which supports up to 192/24 lossless which I find *truly* bridges the gap to my vinyl collection. Separation and thus apparent stage width is noticeably better with digital.
For any number of reasons, I'm looking to expand my sources beyond Spotify and Qobuz had a good price and some really interesting reviews, so I bit. It's been - well, not exactly a "revelation," but eye-opening, and that's with just an iPhone and/or middle-range DAC. I *think* I can hear the difference on a decent bluetooth speaker, but there is a big improvement in aspects like depth and separation on the big set. It's got me thinking about a Wiim. I also like the fact that the app features lots of classical and jazz for discovery, altho the UI isn't quite as slick as Spotify.
and the like (I enjoy SiriusXM) works fine for the car and mobile devices. Honda CarPlay in our Passport uses MP3 for USB based content.
but there is a big improvement in aspects like depth and separation on the big set.
That's where you get the benefits of higher resolution!
