I figure it as an artifact of the times, much like driving an old car from that era where the handling and pollution are no longer market competitive.
it's pretty nice that modern technologies have elevated the audio expectations of the recordings.
The Beatles released Rubber Soul in 1965. Listen to Michelle on the stereo mix and you'll hear McCartney crooning on the right channel and the other Fab 3 doing background on the left. Nothiing in between. No so on "I've just seen a face" on the same album.
But in 1965, I was listening on the AM radio in the car in glorious mono, with a tube amp, no less. (who else remembers waiting for the radio to warm up?) So I didn't yet know or care much about stereo yet. And as 'Tre said above, apparently the Beatlles didn't care about stereo much yet either. But once they started to care, they were geniuses with it.
Hard panned or not.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
