Good idea
LowIQ
to light up the display. You need to find out the lamp voltage and the current you want for the white LEDs. You need to use a soldering iron. A display lamp dimming after warm up seems like a bad connection or resistor somewhere. You will need a volt meter to probe.Wow, a Mac 1500 is Old!
Solid State preamp, Vacuum Tube power amp.
Watch out for those high voltages. Get an amplifier Tech to look at it or wire your own USB/LED lighting system if that is the only thing bothering you. You could use a wall wart and just power a pair of LED with a pair of wires.

An older Mac unit- could be a myriad of issues-
Try to P/U a service manual from Audio Engine-
Could be a component in the lamp circuitIn thinking further-
When was the unit last aligned?
It could also be a case of the tuning circuit drifts as the unit warms up causing the tuner to drift off center tuned...
Happy Listening
