That's software defined radio. I recently got the Airspy HF+ Discovery and a loop antenna (the antenna is discreetly hidden on my second floor balcony) and the combo does a nifty job on long wave, medium wave, shortwave, air and weather, and ham bands.
I've pulled in some great FM DX and can't wait for the AM DX season to get started. Shortwave isn't what it used to be, but there still are some signals/stations to tune in.
I'm using the SDR# (sharp) software and it takes time to explore and learn, but yesterday I finally downloaded the software update (v1891) and played with the FM co-channel splitter. Amazing. It allowed me to "erase" a local FM station and hear a weaker station some 60 miles away ... ON THE SAME FREQUENCY.
Looking forward to playing with this setup even more.
I have a Discovery, too, but I hadn't discovered the splitter, probably
because I've not been paying attention to revisions. I'm still on 1831.
Overall I really like the unit, but I can tell my antenna situation is
holding it back. I don't have the FM/TV antenna wired to that end of the
house, so I'm relying on a Youloop. For AM, I have a Select-A-Tenna facing
it, with my long wire plugged into the S-A-T. The combo definitely kicks
the signal up above any of the individual antennas and lets me peak specific
frequencies on the BCB.
It does a good job on my second floor balcony. It is directional.
My procedure - tune a weak signal, put the PC audio output on bluetooth to my portable headphones, then walk out to the balcony and rotate the YouLoop antenna for best signal strength.
I've got the Youloop on a lazy susan, on a table in the center of the room.
I sit at a desk in the corner, the antenna is behind me, so tuning is
pretty easy. Haven't tried it outside yet, though
Output is run through an a/v receiver and bookshelf speakers. Headphones
might help, but I live alone and don't generally enjoy h/phones.
...Mainly as I had little interest in it.
Later Gator,
Dave

Some are counterfeit, from what I've seen from some SDR users, and don't perform well.
I'm pleased with mine and enjoy the listening possibilities. But I've been a radio "nerd" since I was 10 years old (and now 67).
