FWIW - I've found that the Genalex 6922 gold pin tubes are significantly warmer than most of the other current production tubes. I'm by no means the only one who has expressed that opinion.
The output buffer stage in a CD player has a minimal effect on the overall tone but i suspect the Genalex 6922 might be worth a shot. They'll likely be less expensive that NOS 6922s as well.
Finally, I'm 73 myself - and I can vouch for the loss of highs in my hearing!

Also, one thing I neglected to mention - the gold plating on tube pins will often help the pins fit more snugly and make better contact in the socket(s) on gear that has been in use for a while like his.
