Does it really just come down to the bass requirements? I listen to classical exclusively, I know there are deep notes in some of my music, but not nearly as much as in other genres. Maybe my requirements are more labradoodle? I never felt I was missing anything with my 300B amp, I traded it (not literally, it's in the closet) for my LTA because reviews said it gave a similar sound to a SET amp with a bit more power, AND, a remote! Really content with it, but will be switching speakers soon, to a Quad perhaps, or an open baffle, if I can convince myself they'll fit my limited space options. LTA says driving either should be a breeze. I would happily switch back to a 300B, a pair of Gordon Rankin's 300B mono's would be lovely, but my LTA is so simple, and easy to maneuver. I think OP' horns would be happy with any range of sets, power wise, from 45's to 845's. Those 845's get beefy and expensive, I looked up those Air Tight 211's and they're now $45,000. Oh, my.!

Everything really depends on what you like, your hearing, etc, etc.
I personally think SET is stunning, given a good implementation. Trading off between a low power SET and a higher power push-pull would be a challenge. I think a number of inmates divide the amplification role between SET for the high end and non-SET for the bass (to get the needed power).
To my mind, adding complications to the system reduces musical quality, across sources, amplification, or the speakers. The purity of simplicity is a real thing you can hear (or more often not hear).
It is all about what floats your boat, and how much time and money you want to invest. Personally I like well designed vintage equipment, which is often more hard to find than anything else. But it is the knowing what you want to accomplish and what is going to actually get you there (or closer).
"The purity of simplicity", love that.
I never knew, from an amp or speaker design perspective (I have no training or education in that) but I knew from the first time I turned the power on to my 300B amp, that it was special, musically. I know those that say it's a cop out, because of this or that parameter, but I'm the one listening and enjoying the music. I came from a medium power, 50 watt 6550 amp. And moving to the 22 watt LTA I didn't lose a thing, except for the really heavy output transformers!
