Ah, Lake Merced. 35 years ago, we'd hear the Boys Club's "I Remember Holding You" at school, and then walk across the street, to Lake Merced. Each year, our Valentine's dance was Sadie Hawkins;" that is, girls asked boys. Sadie Hawkins or not, Boys Club's "I Remember Holding You" was one of the dances' slow(er) songs.

The lake was part of my training route for the S.F. Marathon.
19 miles from my house on 30th ave, down to the beach, out to the lake, twice around the lake, and back.
That marathon is a bitch! Going down the hills hurt more than going up them (lost 3 toe nails after that race), and the wind on the beach in our faces that day was brutal. Not so bad for me because I was accustomed to it. Probably you were still wearing diapers that year :)
And finishing at Kezar was worth the pain. I guess...

I'm c/o '89, the last graduating class, who can claim that it was the (admittedly racist) Indian, for all four years. When it came to naming a new mascot, we were already out of school. Because of Lake Merced, we suggested the Loch Monster. It would have been cool, to have a Nessie-like cartoon character, rising from the foggy Lake Merced. We refuse to acknowledge the lame mascot which was actually chosen.
In the 2000s, Lake Merced boating activity ramped up. Schools and clubs use it to practice. Dragon Boat racing is so large, it actually takes place from Treasure Island.
