I use small square rugs, slightly larger than my speakers, under them, w/plastic feet covering the spikes ( Kef 104.2 ).
I tried spikes years ago, thought the sound was etched and hyped compared to the plastic feet on rugs.
And they left holes in my apartment ( at the time ) floor...
There is a Tibetan Store in Berkeley Ca where I got my small rugs.
They would help protect your larger rug from imprints, but over time it may happen anyway.
Isolating or decoupling with the rugs makes the best sound for me on my speakers.
Even plastic feet directly on the hard wood floor doesn't sound as good.
Well, that is encouraging. I think what I will end up doing is setting the speakers, with spikes removed, on the rug with the plastic / rubber feet bearing the weight.
By the way, see a picture of the rug below. There is no way I would 'deep six' this rug!

That's a gorgeous rug!
how about: two slabs of concrete (or granite, or whatever fits the bill) a couple inches larger than the speakers bases, resting on 3 or 4 hockey pucks each, under each speaker (with possibly some footers between slab and speaker, depending on stability)?
