With a happy heart, I'd like to announce my recent move to Iceland! Just two weeks ago now. :)
Of course, as part of my extreme downsizing before the move from Alaska, including concerns of electrical voltage differences, I've also liquidated my usual collection of two audio systems (big one, and small/experimental one). They both went to good homes, with good friends, so I'm happy about that. If I were thinking in terms of cash, I lost several tens of thousands, as I gave one system away entirely free of charge, and "sold" one at a loss of about 90 percent (friend loved the sound, didn't have much money, and I wanted him to have it). It's all good, and I'm happy, as my primary focus at the moment remains live performance of my beloved Baroque, and I'm loving the vibrant creative community here (music and all arts). As an escaped refugee of the USA, I'm instantly back to being with and working with my friends throughout Europe.
Now, I'm thinking of starting over on audio system(s). Since I'm still staying with friends here in Iceland for the moment, I'm thinking of starting small and very modest. At least a step up from earbuds.
Haven't yet been to an audio shop in Reykjavik, nor have I been online to see what's available in the new or used market. There is time. First, I found a good violin maker--just yesterday--to get a bow re-hair, and to establish a good relationship with a good craftsman. Mission accomplished.
Most of my friends here, and others I'm meeting through them every day are performers of all sorts of music (and filmmakers, etc.), so I have no doubt they'll be helping me navigate the local audio equipment market as well.
Just wanted to say "hello" again, and I'll be keeping in touch when I have time. I'm already very busy here and elsewhere. :)

Check out the music of Olafur Arnalds.
Enjoy the city. Try this record store. I scored the second stereo release from Audio Fidelity.

In the most general terms that I might share with others, I've got personal/musical projects that involve working with several friends scattered about Europe, mostly. At the same time, I wanted to live at a "place on Earth" that offered me a different general atmosphere and inspiration than I gain from more highly populated and developed parts of continental Europe. Travel between here and these other places is easy enough from here.Iceland, in some ways like Alaska, offers me a sense of "grand and open nature" that always inspires me, and allows me to breathe more freely.
I also have friends here--both native to this land and imports--who would like to work with me on particular projects (a dear friend and filmmaker is making a film of my life, for instance, and wants to do it here).
While all the above is already plenty reason enough for me to be here now, there's also the political that cannot be entirely ignored. This can be a touchy subject for some, and for the most part, I have little interest in endless discussion, and greater interest in positive action at this point. Let's leave it at that. :)
I hope this gives you at least a bit of insight into my "motives". :)

"With a happy heart" tells a great deal.
Now I wish you success with every reason included within that.

Having friends in a foreign soil is a huge factor.
At times I thought of migrating out of US but I have so many friends here who are dear to me and look after me. At my age it is important.
It sure nice to restart your life again.
Do you have plan to come back to the US ever again?

I don't have any plans to live there again, but to visit or perform, it's not out of the question. Perhaps not anytime soon. Let me enjoy my great escape for a while, after all! :)
I was born in, grew up in, and have lived most of my life in the United States, yet have always noted an interesting fact of my life: most of my music teachers, and most of my closest friends have been, and remain, from elsewhere. Now I'm elsewhere, and I'm feeling very much "at home". More so than I have for a very, very long time.
Whatever you do, do not give up your US citizenship. Enjoy your escapade outside the US. I'm sure everything looks so fresh and interesting!

Just curious, but what caused the mover to Iceland?
I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.
As probably more of a priority than stereo gear in your travels.
Out of the loop here on recent, smaller quality stereo gear (apart from Schitt, which
I'm REALLY happy with in my limited experience), but what little I've read at AA makes
it seem like a golden age for it. Have become a fan of US AudioMart the past few years
so any equivalent where you are might be a blessing for used gear (the best kind IMO!)
Right questions/right boards should help get you going again - still a lot of helpful
and knowledgeable folk scattered about here.
Nice to hear you're in a good place and amongst the creatives, that's some good company no doubt!
Welcome back!

Actually, regarding the warmer jackets, temperatures in Alaska during winter can be considerably lower than here. Depending upon where in Alaska, and where here. Excepting SE Alaska (where I wasn't), winter is generally colder in Alaska.I haven't yet had to use my warmest Alaska gear.

Vacationed there years ago by driving the ring road. Definitely has a rugged beauty.
Once you leave Reykjavik, you're pretty much in the sparse country. Must hike the Vatna glacier and take in all the beautiful waterfalls.

Best wishes on your new adventure. We just drove the ring road in October. It is a wonderful place.

I live here now, so I have plenty of time to explore. This is not a bucket list tourist trip. :)
The Blue Lagoon is another.
Blue lagoon is certainly impressive, however, there are "secret/natural/undeveloped" springs that Icelanders don't tell tourists about. Much more natural, private, and free! ;)
Can't imagine more natural nor private than this. :)

Hi, I am glad that you have settled down. My son recommended Iceland a lot. He went there multiple times.
