Seems it's a thing.
I have a friend with a score or so lp's and no turntable, but he got the lp's from a neighbor.

The article is 2 years old, and it wasn't really news then.
Many pop stars, especially Taylor Swift, sell at least 3 or 4 vinyl versions of every album. Same music but different cover art and different colored vinyl. Many (most?) Swifties buy all of them. That adds up quickly.

I am impressed. Not four, but six! And that's on a new album.
Learned from the Beatles/Dead/Stones, etc. franchise fracking.
Cashing in on the collectible re-release before the fan base is on social security... chef's kiss.
It'd be interesting see how this marketing would look 50-60 years from now.
Of course, I won't get to see that, but may see coffee pods, toy trains, socks, and other wonders.
Much excitement awaits.
And I mean no sarcasm on any of this, more power to them and it makes the fans happy. Win/win.

I sold my TT around 5 years ago. Probably have 250 LP's. I just haven't worked the energy to sell them...likely never will.
coin collectors don't spend the coins, stamp collectors don't mail letters with the collection. museums collect for historical record or for display, not utilization .
of course, investment quality collections are seldom utilized for the intended purpose, but fun is where you find it. collectors can have any personal goal they might enjoy. I have a nice player, but also have too many records to listen to often, some go unplayed for years, so am not that far removed from those with records but no player.
I collected stamps into my early 20's. These days they're only worth face value so I DO use them on the few occasions when I need to snail mail.

Steve
this sounds like specific senses
I gave most of my vinyl and CDs to friends last year. I kept the ones that are signed and am in process of selling my vinyl gear and CD player.
Regards,
Steve
And I still buy them.
Do have a CDR drive to rip them with.

I still have a vinyl rig up and running, but I also have 4 additional TTs that are in the queue for rebuild/repair...
Happy Listening
Just a couple thousand these days... but I don't buy records
(vinyl) anymore nor have I bought records just to own them.
Haven't had a TT in several years though do intend to buy another one.
Someday.
Probably.
Apparently it's not a priority...

I sold or gave away all but two dozen vinyl LP's. I kept a few pieces of vinyl compatible hardware:- KAB modified Technics SL1200mkII TT
- Denon DL-103R, Dynavector DV-20X, Benz Glider (Soundsmith retip)
- Bob's Devices SUT, PS Audio GCPH phono
- Misc alignment tools, scale, brushes, loupe, fluids, RCM, etc. It's all in the basement storage room. I set it up and spin albums every few months just for fun and then I put it all away. I soon realize that I much prefer having instant access to thousands of albums from my music server and streaming services w/o the hassle.

The music does not reside on the iPad. It's just a remote control.

I have a turntable but it's in storage in the basement. The last time I used it was 4 or 5 years ago to transfer a LP to CD for a friend. I got rid of my LP collection years ago but kept about 20 LPs that are special to me. For example, several were recorded by a band in which the lead guitarist was best man at my wedding. Interestingly, my adult son took all of my Beatles albums. I've got no reason to get rid of the turntable and its nice to have available if I need to transfer another album or just get an urge to relive the past.
. . . of personal inscriptions on the record jacket. For instance, I have an album of Sephardic Songs sung by Metropolitan Opera tenor (in comprimario roles) Nico Castel. He very graciously signed it as follows: "To Chris, my favorite Pacific Coast accompanist". (I'd performed some of the same songs as the ones on this album with Nico when he came "out west" to do a concert one year.)
