before the love affair gets too deep, those amps were all custom modified by Osley , the same brains that made what was supposed to be the best acid around, back then.
I thought is interesting to read about all the controls the bass player had built into his instrument , where he could select different speaker arrays, single or multiple in various configurations, all kinds of acoustic effects , far beyond the usual expected tone controls.
I didn't notice anything trippy when I saw the band, but I did walk out on the third day when it became apparent it was just going to be night of full psychedelic noodling. I was full up already.

spent a LOT of time developing, designing, investing time and money into
expanding what their instruments were capable of from a technical aspect.
So did Jack Casady, who ended up with Alembic #001.
As far as walking out on the Dead, I was fortunate to see their shortest set
(45 minutes at SNACK in 1975), about the amount of time it seemed to
take for them to tune up normally.
Not being a fan, I was grateful for the short set it being my only time seeing them live.

Here's Jack Casady playing his old heavily modified Guild Starfire II bass at a recent gig. Jack is all about the tone and has been working with luthiers to get his sound for a long time.

SNACK was my first concert. The Dead's set was actually billed as Jerry Garcia & Friends, as the Dead were officially on hiatus at the time, but it was pretty much the Dead. They previewed songs from their yet to be released Blues for Allah, which together with Wake of the Flood are my two favorite Dead albums.
ps- I have the poster from that concert, by the great Randy Tuten.
this CD set released in Europe.
Broadcast performances of many shows are now available as such.
Decent SQ, worth having.
What a great day it was! No Eddie Palmieri set or Graham Central
Station on the CD. Nor the spoken word stuffs.
Agree about those two UA Dead LPs!

My buddy and I were seniors in high school and attending our first "real" concert. We took his dad's '59 Ford station wagon- it wasn't retro or vintage at the time, just a 16 year old family car! I remember being just wide-eyed and awestruck the whole day, start to finish. It wasn't long before we became Winterland regulars.
ps- 50th anniversary of that concert coming up. I need to take a moment and let that sink in.
