Well, my family wants to get me a gift or gifts and a portable MP3 Player could be it. Nothing high-end or expensive, however. Last one I had was a Sandisk Sport Clip, which I would buy again but I don't even think they are manufactured any longer. Last one I had, I left on an AirFrance plane with Shure earbuds which I like. I'll take lost-and-found on that, but didn't turn up.
Ability to do lossless audio is a requirement. The Sport Clip or any Sandisk player seems to have a good FM radio, which I appreciate a lot.
I have one of these, very small, sounds very high-end, great battery life.

I'm an old dog and slow to adapt, but even I have submitted to putting music on a phone or streaming it on a phone.
For travel I use an "iFi Portable DAC Headphone Amplifier" $150 on Amazon. About the size of a deck of cards, plugs into your phone, and will drive a wide range of headphones.
I'm pleased with it. Appears to be good value for the money.
Still have my SanDisk Clip in a bag somewhere. Great little device.
I can't make a recommendation as I've been using my iPhone for years now. But the Amazon link below will reveal dozens of available MP3 players. Good luck!

why use a separate device these days?
I like this one it is pretty much no frills, I have a 1Tb card for mine and I rip cd wave files to it, it sounds good and doubles as a DAC, it's reasonably priced.
