Just noticed Schiit Audio has introduced a new product called "Loki". A statement copied from their website is as follows:
"Yes, tone control. As in, equalizer. And yeah, we know that tone controls have kinda fallen off the planet for the last few decades. But now we think it's time for them to come back-in a new, super-high-fidelity, low noise, single-discrete-gain-stage and LC filtering kind of way. (In English, that means this is an exceptionally quiet, transparent, great-sounding device.)"
Link to product for those interested is shown below. For only $149, it might be worth trying.
I'm evaluating and breaking it in now; so far very! positive. It's now nice to actually hear it first instead of poorly attempting to rip it apart from pseudo designer speculation. For the price, I am just tickled! Kudos!! I'm going to enjoy this weekend's listening...
Should I be concerned with all the Havoc created with the PHASE?
Also, is there any mention of the 'width' of the filters?
Too much is never enough
The problem with tone controls is they lack the actual amplification power to 'gain' midbass and bass.
Attenuation from neutral is nothing.
What would really be needed is top notch gain, so ALL functions attenuate.
Full gain at max dials..
Then it might sound good IMO.
What is really needed is a box with gain, and switches between notch filters, and broad four area dials (Treble, upper mid, midbass, bass), plus step/tilt switches
In the digital domain there is the Behringer DEQ2496.
Something as complex in the analog domain.. So what if it cost $10k
LOL
"The problem with tone controls is they lack the actual amplification power to 'gain' midbass and bass."
The tone control mentioned by the OP has actual amplification.
"Attenuation from neutral is nothing.

Attenuation from neutral isn't nothing, it's attenuation. What does full gain at max dials mean? How many db is "full gain"? Why does this matter?
"What is really needed is a box with gain, and switches between notch filters, and broad four area dials (Treble, upper mid, midbass, bass), plus step/tilt switches"
A notch filter tends to be much, much deeper and narrower than what is referred to as a tone control. The tone control mentioned by the OP is a box with gain and four area dials...
It's sort of confusing. A discontinued DAC becomes a tone-control box. :)
You would think they could come up with a another (different) clever name. Maybe the Schiit Regurg??
Dave.
Or maybe "Brown 25"?
And do you remember Kentucky Fried Movie a few years later? ;-)

Remember them both well. Amazingly, they both hold up even after all these years.
Juvenile humor at it's best! I was quite the juvenile in the 1970's. ;-)
