Both mine are oil bearings, so it will be interesting if your really is a grease bearing. You are right that it's a 301 bearing though.The tone arm is heavy all right. They way they balance it, is to take up most of the force in a big coil spring under the silver coin-slot side screw on the inside of the vertical bearing, and then use a lighter spring to make the fine adjustment using the coin slot screw on top.
I really think it needs to run at 6 grams or so with a cart that has little compliance. A Ronette ceramic/crystal cart works well in mine, and I use it to play 78s.
I also have an SME 3009 mounted along the back, and it works very well. Rumble is low, speed stability is good. The table really is quite usable, but needs a heavy plinth like all the Garrard idlers.
