So many classic rock era records were made by letting groups of talented but not very skilled musicians screw around in a studio until something cool happened. Jazz musicians are used to make music with whatever is at hand; it's the very nature of improvisation. A jazz musician is expected to be able to make the gig, even if he never met the other musicians before the session. I've produced 5 cds, and I figured if the musicians couldn't cut an albums' worth of material in one day, I had the wrong musicians.
