It's kind of a mystery to me. Forget "recording quality" for just one minute. IMO, far and away heavy handed production ruins more records than does engineering. Relatively simple recording techniques and inexpensive recording equipment can capture the reality and rawness of a musical event. I think it takes far more skill and money to create a production than it does to simply record an event.In my experiences minimalist recordings, be they audiophile or not, are the best sounding of all recordings.
