Re: Solen in Tweeter: loss of dynamics?

>> There were two inductors in each crossover, are both inductors the same spec? What would it do to the sound by changing them?

They're not the same spec. I don't have the spec for the tweeter circuit inductor, so changing it was not an option. I don't think it matters much, if at all. The woofer inductor is far more important because it's in series with the driver, it has an iron core, and it's such a small gauge. The tweeter inductor is in a bypass position, so it has far less effect on the sound. It's also an air-core, so it won't saturate. And 18ga is far less of a problem with higher frequencies than it is with bass, which need lots of copper to propogate.

>> Could the difference in wire guage now between the woofer and tweeter also make a difference here (The wire guage to the woofer is now roughly twice as thick as to the tweeter)?

Not AFAIC.

>> Also, have you tried different drivers in the same cabinet (I think the cabinet appears well constructed)? I'm also interested in a ProAc like clone, which appears well documented, but using the same cabinet.

I own a pair of Reference Connoisseurs and two pairs of Reference 22s. The 22 Reference cabinet is very good, the Ref Con cabinets are excellent. AFAIC the Energy 22 drivers are fantastic. I have absolutely no interest in replacing them. If you want to change the sound that much, maybe you should consider different speakers.

Some further thoughts:
- Did you change the electrolytic cap in the woofer zobel? It's the most likely component to fail with age.
- How many hours on the new caps? Are you hearing a lack of break-in?
- You might want to go the rest of the way and replace the Solens with a 4.7 and 6.0 Auricap. Solens are good, but they're definitely not as airy as Auris.
