I used PVC for my "no-flexy" rack for the same reason as you. I cut lengths of 1-1/2 inch PVC pipe and strung them between the shelves. Besides covering the threaded rods, it also stops the rack from swaying. Also, assembly of the rack is a snap because there are only two nuts on each rod, one at the top and one at the bottom. It makes assembling the rack a snap. You need to have the PVC cut on a radial saw or table saw so that each section under a shelf is the same exact length. Before assembly, I polished the PVC sections with jeweler's rouge.
