When I built my volume attenuator I used 18AWG wire from a torn down building. I think it was part of an alarm system. It sounded pretty good for the 15 dollars it cost me. I would guess that you should build IC's out of the same wire as what you use in the preamp. I never really experimented with the wire inside, but now that you mention it I should...
