The polarity of the tweeter will depend on the crossover design. Yours probably has a 2nd or 3rd order Butterworth filter, so the tweeter polarity should be reversed with respect to the woofer (in the case of the second order and sometimes with a third order). When you connected the tweeter in the same polarity as the woofer, the suckout at the crossover frequency was exactly what you'd expect with a properly designed filter.
