Thanks for the DIY rollerblock post. I've been wanting to make a set for
awhile, but couldn't figure out what to use for the concave base, but the
stainless spoon idea was great!
I actually own a set of $250 Symposium Rollerblocks, and I decided to make
a set that closely matches it. The one on this site uses wood bases, but
why not try metal? I think the original one uses aluminum, but the metal that one can easily buy is steel.
I bought a bar of 5/8 inch steel($7) used to make keys from local parts store and had a hardware shop cut it for me to reasonable length pieces. You can actually cut through it with hacksaw in 5 minutes if you wanted.
You can actually buy already-shortened pieces they use to make keys at the
hardware store at $1.20 a piece.
Also, I used this "steel bond" glue stuff they sell at hardware store that
looks like soft putty, that once mixed, hardens like steel and bonds steel
to steel in minutes! The rest is the same, which is stainless spoons and
chrome bearings (I used 1/2 inch chrome bearings $5 for 20 bearings).
I just finished it, and so far, to my ears the sound is basically indistinguishable from the original Rollerblocks, which is extended, clear, focused sound, with terrific bass definition. The sound brightens and opens up overall but somehow less grainy compared to black diamond racing cones. The BDR sounds muddy by comparison, but BDR does seem to have a thicker more robust midrange/lower midrange (due to muddyness?).
