I believe you are refering to the article about a year ago where they tested the various media for quality, and that included the 'audio'cdr's and our friendly, neighborhood data cdrs.
In that the author *did* mention the method of starting with an audio cdr to validate whatever it checks, then prying open the door and tossing in the data cdr.
His upshot to the article was that he could hear virtually no difference in end product recordings.
I know that he did get the data cd's to work with his perhaps rough methodology.
