Most larger hardware stores carry the solid threaded rods. I built one 3 years ago. You can also buy very nice veneered MDF. You can have it veneered with any wood you want (maple). I do not like painting the shelves. I glued 2 3/4 inch pieces together for a nice thick shelf. You could even cut your shelves with a curve and router the edges. The biggest expense was the 3/4 inch nuts and washers (eight per shelf).
