With those batteries, you can hit a bit over 14.0 bafore you need to worry. There is means to re-combine electrolyzed H2O inside. If you reach too high a voltage it will start seperating water into its componets. Heat wil be created when it gets put back together. This is the other concern. However, I have been party to turning these batteries from rectangular solids into something more resembiling a sphere without any degredation( actually, they all measured better after one of these sessions).
I only use these things to propell cars, but the chemistry and operation is the same. I deal in hundreds of volts and hundreds of amps for short periods of time.
There is some modification required to use them in cars which charge the individual ones to 14.5-15v when the alternator is spinning.
