Re: rollerblock test the cheap way

I am about to try the rollerblocks myself without breaking the bank. Tungsten bearing balls and machined bases are great, but if it doesn't work, I don't want to be looking at $200 spent on the hardware - here's what I'll be using to see if this has any impact on my setup:

3 marbles (Walmart toy section, about $2 buys enough that you can pick the roundest and smoothest marbles, there's also three big ones in there in case marble size matters)

3 $1.50 ladles (walmart kitchen utensil section, about 2.5" diameter, very round, almost exactly shaped as the Barry Diament design),

1 pack of rope caulk (Home Depot A/C and duct isle, about $3 for 2 pounds)

setup:
- cut off the ladle handle with a cutting blade on my dremel
- place remaining ladle cup into a bed made out of rope caulk
- level the cup and place on top of the air-suspended stone slab I have under the CD player (cutting board for you). Use some celophane to keep the rope caulk from messing up the base.
- place marbles in cups, set up CD player on top

keeping everything as level as possible before placing the CD player on top seems to be the key.

Now, if this makes an audible difference beyond what I am getting from superballs, cones, caulk balls, etc, I may go and have the stuff machined and get some ball bearing balls (the budget version, Tungsten balls are just beyond my pain threshold for audio tweak costs)

I may do this test this weekend, given I have nothing else waiting to work on.

Peter
