Is Bi-Wiring Sensible or Not?

Is the concept of bi-wiring a genuine worthwhile improvement, or a misguided marketing ploy?

Before you rush to defend bi-wiring, let me explain the point.

If you plan to spend say $300 on speaker cables, you have a choice:

One expensive $300 pair of cables carrying all frequencies and serving all speakers
Two less expensive $150 (presumably less good) pairs of cables, still carrying all frequences, serving the separate speakers
Maybe three, even cheaper cables $100 tri-wiring a 3 way system.

Unless the crossover is at the amplifier end of the cables (why is this never the case?), each cable always has to carry the full frequency range delivered from the amp.

I would anticipate the first option would, or at least should, always produce the better sound.

I suppose the usual reason for bi-wiring is as an upgrade from a single wire setup. The question then is, Should "double up" with more of the existing cable, or should I sell it and get a far better set of cables? The easy thing to do is the former, but I'm far from convinced it's the better option.

So, is bi-wiring defensible by a logical arguement in a single amp (not bi-amped) setup?
