Usually external crossovers are mounted on the speaker cabinet, but take care to keep them as far as possible from the driver elements. There can be inductive crosstalk between the crossover coils and the driver voice coils. For the same reason they should not be placed close to the amp, where the magnetic field of the power transformer can also send EMI to the crossover coils.
