I suspect that what you mean by "real" is practical in terms of cost or perhaps conventional.

The very best bass I ever heard was from a Genesis 200 system. The Genesis 200 system is comprised of two towers (not Lord of the Rings!), one devoted to treble and midrange and upper bass, and the other devoted to bass. The two bass towers had 16, 8" drivers per side (8 in the front and 8 in the rear), or 32 drivers total. It was driven by a 1800 watt class D switching amp. The smaller drivers provide less distortion which is why Genesis chose to use them. The system probably adjusted the frequency response to result in a flat bass response. The bass was amazing, very deep and very fast - several steps better than my Genesis subwoofer which has a single 15" bass woofer. Obviously, the 15" driver is more efficient in terms of space and cost, but nowhere near as clean.
