That ONLY applies if those 2 black wires are both HOT (which in your case it's not!)Hey, don't feel bad, we all have been there at one time... this is the way you learn about your house wiring...
Does this image look familiar??? by breaking the bridge you effectively cut the jiuce to the the other black wire.
