one black wire was your HOT and the other is to go to the rest of your outlets the same exact way!.... Called wiring sockets in series.... First off, why did you break the line bridge? did you think both black leads were HOT?You can still save the outlet by simply using a small piece of the black wire to jump the bridge you broke off.... just leave insulation on it for safety sakes.....
In the future get an inexpensive AC detector (a pen like device with a red light at the end that will light when near 90+ volts).... When your outlet was completly disconnected and the wires are NOT touching each other... you simply turn the breaker back on and check one wire for current and then the other..... if you would have done this you would have dicovered one would cause the light to glow and the other would not..... one is hot the other feeds the other outlets....
