Hi, PeterThe CS4397 has differential voltage output already which is unlike the multi-bit DAC and from my understanding no IV conversion is required for CS4397. And yes, last night I pay the board another close visit, there is no OP-AMP at all before the HDAM circult. But there are about 10 transistors between the CS4397 and the covered in copper HDAM module.
I do found a Silmic 220uf 16V as the signal output cap for the HDAM. Even though the Silmic is a very high quality Bi-polar cap, I still don't think a Bi-polar cap should be used as a signal path. You know, people put MIT, Jensen in their Pre-amp as signal path. There is no reason why we should not put the same quality cap here.
I believe there are a few reasons for the big improvement when you mod your CD and two of them are that you have a dedicated Power supply for the Analog stage (for your zap filter). The second is that there is no signal coupling cap required. (as the Zap filter is designed without one from my understanding).
As my ultimate tweak of the player is to get the CS4397 and output that to a tube buffer, before doing that I am going to see if I can make the HDAM to do better.
Happy New Year
Alan
