I tend to find a broadening of images (not the soundstage itself) is often associated with a loss of focus and the sound becoming a little loose and soft, especially noticeable in the bass. In the bass, this can be associated with a slight mid to upper bass boost which can mask the extreme low bass that the speakers are capable of, and I've definitely noticed that when I've had my speakers isolated rather than coupled. In many ways the differences are small and I can find things to like in both presentations, but I seem to have ended up preferring the speakers coupled so the monitors are spiked to the stands with cones and the stands are spiked to the slab floor. I definitely prefer isolation with the electronics however, and while my rack is spiked to the floor the components are individually isolated from the rack. That seems to strike the best balance for me - YMMV considerably.
