Re: Hissing noise

This may be considered a bad idea by others, but here's what I would (and have) do (done).

Assuming that you prove the noise is really coming from the preamp (as Mr. Curl obviously suspects), and you find that you don't have a volume control on your amps, and you are using RCA interconnects, you can build an inline attenuator.

From you local electronic parts store, you can usually find RCA male and female gold RCA jacks that can be screwed together, to build an inline connector. Do some math and figure out what kind of resistor(s) you might want to use, and go buy high quality ones from partsconnexion, for example. Solder the resistors in, and place between your interconnect and your power amplifier. (Do not put it at the pre-amp side of the interconnect!!)

You might find that 6dB - 10dB will reduce the pre-amp hiss sufficiently that you won't be able to hear from the listening area (all that really matters). For this, you should be able to get away with one resistor per attenuator, directly in the signal path. If you feel you need something more like 20dB+ attenuation, then build a l-pad or some such.

Obviously there are tradeoffs. But the noise generated by the added resistor in the signal path should be insignificant compared to the reduction in noise from the pre-amp.

This is a $20 - $30 solution.

Good luck,
Martin.
