I have owned and used the Williams Hart RIAA stage for probably the last 10 years. It has never failed and, to my ears, is an extremely good phonostage. The only review I have seen was one in Hi-Fi News and Record Review and this is where I first heard of it. The review was glowing.A couple of things w.r.t. using the stage.
1. The input sockets are on the front panel and the Outputs are on the rear. This does not really make it look very pretty and, if you are short of space you would need to take this into account.
2. The unit is not exactly good looking, though build quality is good. Hide the boxes if possible.
3. Keep the PSU box as far as possible from the Phono stage box. Thankfully, the interconnecting lead from PSU to stage is more than long enough to achieve this. If the boxes are placed side by side, then you WILL get hum from the PSU induced into the phono stage.
Once these factors are addressed, the unit is an extremely fine performer and, to date I have had no desire to even think of replacing it.
As far as I can recall, building the unit was quite easy. The instructions are very clear at that time and, in a period of 10 years they may have improved even more. It took me about three evenings to build it, but I wasn't rushing anything. If your a confident solderer, this time may be less. I am a capable solderer but, as I said, I did not want to rush anything and risk stuufing it up. Making up the PSU to RIAA dc power cable is very fiddly, but then again i HATE soldering DIN plugs! :(
Only basic tools are required as the case is prepunched for all the socket and PCB mounting points.
Hope this helps.
Smoke me a kipper...I'll be Back for Breakfast.Cheers
