I think that unless the reflections you reduce with this arrangement are early reflections which will actually reach you in the listening position without reflecting at another point or points first, you won't get as much benefit as you would placing the same amount of absorption in the corners or at other more critical points. All you will really do, if the reflections aren't going to reach the listening position on that "bounce", is to reduce the reverberation time of the room by reducing the total energy present. Yes, that will eliminate some reflections reaching you later but the energy level of those reflections will have been reduced anyway due to spread over a much longer total length of travel plus the losses that occur at each reflection point.

You will actually get more sound absorbed from the same amount of absorbing material by placing it in the corners in the form of bass traps, and as panels at the first reflection points. That will give you a bigger reduction in reverberation time which will result in a greater reduction of later reflections anyway.
