I've been using Rain-X for polishing my CD's for a while now. I have not noticed any great improvements in sound (maybe a touch more smoothness), but holding the polished CD does seem to be "Shinier" when reflecting a light off it. No detrimental effects as far as sound or damage to Discs go. I use a Philip Rotary CD cleaning machine which uses a circular Chamois pad to buff the disc.
